The Ironwood - Families Welcome My husband and I saw a remarkable performer this week at Calgary's Ironwood Stage & Grill. Her name is Laila Biali. And you can see her below in this less than artful photo taken courtesy of my Blackberry. Biali is a gifted jazz artist who delivers her fare with infectious enthusiasm and rare charm. She brings to mind a cross between Diana Krall and an early Sarah McLachlan. My reason for plugging Biali and the award-winning Ironwood is because her performance was so delightful, I found myself wishing our children had joined us. Upon inquiry, Ironwood owner Patrick McIntyre tells me that, in fact, children are most welcome at his venue. "We have a class 'one A' license. It's kid-friendly," says McIntyre. "We had a family in recently who made a point of thanking me for letting children in. He said 'I love this. My kids love live music and it's great to be able to take them to a live music venue.' If this was a rowdier bar, it would be different. But we're not like that." The Ironwood Stage & Grill offers an especially family-friendly musical brunch event (delicious menu for all ages) every second Saturday. |

The Nile Guide The Ironwood has a long-standing reputation of being one of Calgary's finest folk music venues. Nestled in amongst the promenade of quaint shops and cafes along 9th avenue, the Ironwood is truly a jewel in the crown of the community of Inglewood. Live music is featured every night of the week; be it the fun and informal weekly wednesday open mic, or a saturday evening showcase of the hottest new touring act, the Ironwood boasts a tantalizing selection of sounds which is only matched by its outstanding menu. Offering a range of inspired dishes that range from heart-healthy summer salads to gourmet pasta and steak dishes, the Ironwood gives a fresh new take on a night out at the bar. The combination of warm, inviting atmosphere, well-made but modestly-priced food, world class entertainment and disarmingly-friendly staff makes it easy to see why the Ironwood is a favorite venue amongst so many Calgary locals. |

The NEW Ironwood Stage & Grill - WOW!! Music is THE THING at The Ironwood though, & there will be no recycling or bargain-hunting there. Not being a tech-gal myself, the make & model number etc of the yet-to-be-installed brand new sound system went in one ear and out the other, but the room already feels warm and fuzzy. Add in the new capacity of about 200 bodies, a great looking (& pretty inviting) bar and... you get the picture. |

Add in the new capacity of about 200 bodies, a great looking (& pretty inviting) bar and... you get the picture. The place is fabulous: an intimate stage, comfortable tables with unobstructed views, and an awesome, friendly staff. Now add to that a kitchen that does stellar pub food. |

Ironwood finds new historic home When Patrick MacIntyre opened Ironwood Stage and Grill in Inglewood in 2006, his idea was to complement Gerry Garvey's King Eddy blues music with folk and roots at the other end of 9th Avenue S.E. Unfortunately the city did not renew the lease on the King Eddy, and it was closed down. But hard work and a passion to provide live music have earned MacIntyre a reputation across the country, and the Quonset hut that houses Ironwood is now the No. 1 destination for singer-songwriters in Western Canada. The venue attracts around 400 live music acts per year and around 150 devotees who pay a cover charge for each event -- to listen, not talk. Success has outgrown the present location and by the end of this month, Ironwood will be relocated into the Garry Theatre building just two blocks east along 9th Avenue. It's a big move for MacIntyre, who began booking acts when he managed a brew pub in his home province of Nova Scotia. When he moved to Calgary in 1994, he took a job as manager and bartender at King Henry VIII along Stephen Avenue Walk and was soon booking local musicians for performances that grew to being held every night. After consultation with Garvey, who is still a big booster for live music, MacIntyre bought the Ironwood, gave it a new ceiling, sanded down the floors and built such a reputation that performers now confi rm a booking there three months before organizing their tours. Sixty per cent of the crowd are regulars who appreciate the uniqueness of the surroundings, decent food and music written and performed by the artists. Two Saturdays each month, Ironwood features the Prime Time 18-piece big band. It's very popular but their numbers mean seating has to be restricted to 120. The move to the Garry Theatre will allow for more than 200 people to watch each show. MacIntyre says the Garry Theatre is ideal for his business, especially as it keeps him in the trendy, arts-friendly community of Inglewood. It was built in 1909 as a pool hall and in the 1930s, it was extended back to become a movie theatre. Since then it has also been home to the Loose Moose Improvisational Theatre Company, and then the sloped floor was levelled to provide space for a furniture store. Workers are busy today building a lounge area by the front window for patrons who will be able to eat and drink without paying the cover charge as the main seating/dining and stage area are being built behind a reception wall. That space also has an open kitchen and seven-metre bar along the east side of the seating area. MacIntyre's new Ironwood Stage & Grill will still be the only mid-size live music venue in the city. Open seven days a week, it will keep him busy, but he's already talking about opening more Ironwoods with a similar theme in other cities across Western Canada. |
The Ironwood Stage & Grill is a live music venue for original music. Due to the popularity and demand of many of our performances, private tables are not always available. On busy nights, table seating is often shared with friends you haven't met yet...
